In the February issue of ELLE magazine, the article “Rough Riders” explains how to get matte, dull-looking, “lived-in” hair. You know, that I just woke up, haven’t showered, ratty ponytail look that most of us achieve by waking up and putting our hair in a ponytail. But apparently there are some people with hair SO AMAZING that it takes real effort to fug it up.
This reminds me of an article I read years ago (in Nylon, I think) about how to achieve chipped nail polish. Seriously.
All kidding aside, matte hair done right can look kind of cool. The messy, disheveled look was seen stomping down countless spring/summer 2011 runways, including Calvin Klein, thanks to Redken Creative Consultant Guido Paulo. “Textured, matte hair looks really modern and sexy right now,” Paulo told ELLE. “It’s a little more unkempt and rock ’n’ roll, so it has a certain ease.”
Bumble and bumble is capitalizing on the trend by releasing a new styling product Bb. Texture Hair (un)Dressing Creme in March 2011. Bb. Texture is specifically designed to create these matte, bedhead styles in one step. “We started seeing that sort of hand-done, second-day-hair look on the streets and on celebrities like Alexa Chung and Mary-Kate Olsen a couple of seasons ago,” the company’s senior artistic director, Howard McClaren told ELLE, “but stylists were having to use a combination of products–usually surf spray, hair powder, and styling cream–to reproduce it for shows. So we thought, there’s a real need here for something completely new.”
Bb. Texture has the moldable hold of a gel, but separates and moisturizes like a cream. It has a dry texture with no stickiness and provides volume. Bumble and bumble stylist Jordan M. recommends running Bb. Texture from roots to ends through wet hair before blow-drying it with a diffuser, or working it into just the roots of hair “to bump up body and give it that just-rolled-out-of-bed look.”
“The whole idea is to look like you couldn’t care less. Even though, of course, you do,” “McClaren says.
